The climbing training book you should read first- before its too late ! =)

I've recently purchased the book (with author signature, yay!) and i've come to like it very much. I think it's the book the sport has been lacking for quite some time, as many of us climbers suffer their little (and big) aches and pains.
So before buying any of the 26 climbing books on the best campus board drill, you might want to give this book a look.
The book is divided in two parts. The first part deals with the general concepts of sports- and climbing injuries, e.g. understanding of pain, preventive measurements (proper body movement, decreasing excessive overloading of specific areas) or the currently applied measurements for acute- and long term treatment / rehabilitation.
The second part details common climbing injuries (e.g. shoulder impingement, finger pulley tear, golfer/tennis elbow). Each chapter covers a certain body part (fingers/hands, shoulders, elbow), and of course exercises for recovery are presented (probably the reason one buys such a book).
The chapters are based upon data from recent sports medicine research articles and i've found it to be quite up to date. Especially the first chapter reads like a literature review of recents sports medicine with a reasonably narrow focus on climbing related injuries. So there's also much more to learn than just avoiding crimping ! ;) But don't expect too many "that one time when my pulley snapped on that horrific E12 X scottish winter trad suicide storm mission expedition and i still pulled through" stories, although there are some anectodes.
The book is nicely illustrated with photos of the man himself performing exercises and with anatomical drawings. I think especially the photo sections could be more extensive, as for me it was sometimes hard to imagine exactly perform an exercise from just 1 still image and a small text. A few pictures with full range of motion would have been better in my opinion. However a physiotherapist or sports medic can surely easily clarify this. For more detailed anatomical drawings one can refer to a medicinal text book.

Overall, i like the style of dave's writing (can only reccommend "9 of 10 climbers..." by him), as it tries to give you a positive mindset to work constructively on an injury. For most of us, it will sooner or later become an issue, and i think with this book one can embark on the journey of recovery and actually know a little bit what one is doing, instead of the far too common "i dont climb now for 3 months and then i'll be fine..." ;)

Fixed injuries I didn't even know that I had

Had high hopes for this book and it totally delivered. While not a comprehensive work on any single injury, this gives a great roadmap to physiology and outlines a careful, scientific approach to both injury prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation. With all of the "armchair science" floating around in the climbing world, this is a necessary and sobering alternative to the body of (mostly anecdotal) information extant both in the gym and on the web.

Maybe the most valuable part of the book was how Macleod outlines the conflicts of interest & common miscommunications between the patient and doctor. I've always been hesitant to seek medical opinion for this reason (I don't want to just be told, "Rest it for another X months and RICE it"), but feel confident about countering the (often justified) assumptions that the doctor may have about me going in to the appointment.

Get it. Totally worth the money.

Highly Recommend this for injury prevention and treatment

Great climbing book to purchase if you seek to prevent injury, or the knowledge to work through a current one. This book gives great detail on why just taking a few weeks off from an injury is not good enough. Fixing the route cause is more important. An example is golfers elbow. This is usually caused by locking off too much. By practicing and focusing on more dynamic moves, and incorporating stretches and eccentric lifts in this book; you can prevent reoccurrence. Taking time off will work until you start climbing again, at which time the issue will reoccur.

Patchy and frustrating

The book is a recommended text for a Coursera on-line class on logic. Some bits are quite good, some are confusing and some are just impenetrable.

My biggest complaint, though, is about the exercises provided. There are no answers in the book so you have no idea whether you have done the exercises correctly and, as a consequence, learn nothing from them. I found the book a waste of a considerable amount of money.

Carries on Tradition of Obfuscation and Wallet-Thinning

This text furthers the tradition of philosophy professors to take complex ideas and make them more complex and obfuscated. Reading it is like revisiting my old upper-division classes and the old drowsiness returns.

The lack of answers to the quizzes shows disdain for the reader, assumed to be a captive college student. If you're reading it for knowledge, there are clearer, better books all around us. If it's for the Coursera course, there are clearer, better books all around us. But if must have it, read on.

Don't bother to buy it, you'll never read it more than once if that. Rent it just for the duration of the class if you really want it. Even then you'll be getting ripped off. The prices are typical student-rip-off prices... if it weren't a so-called "text book" it would sell for less than $20. But even if the teacher doesn't require it, he can "suggest" it and people will buy it thinking it'll help them get through the course. It might, but only if he quizzes specifically for it.

Finally, if you really want to buy this book, I'd suggest you look for the "Concise Edition" here on Amazon. It's the latest edition and sells for about $32, less than 1/3 the cost of the non-concise edition (the bloated, expensive edition). It has fewer bells and whistles, but has more than you'll need.

If you are fond of calculating the value of a book by the number of memes you get per dollar, then this book is a good value. However, I wonder if the text hasn't become a bit bloated after 8 editions. There is material covered lightly here that is the subject of entire separate books, yet no indication is given that a superficial treatment is being provided (for example, material from linguistics and decision theory). The material that is provided is generally described well - the explanations are clear and there are sufficient examples to fix concepts.

The exam is Computer based and you have 150 minutes to answer 80 Questions.
The Questions are (mostly) multiple choice type and there is NO penalty for an incorrect answer.
Some of the Questions have more than one correct answer. You must get ALL the options correct for you to be awarded points.
For questions with a single answer, the answers will have a button next to them. You will be able to select only one button.

love exists in a fine colorful book

I must have put at least 30 sticky notes in this book; as a representation of the underlying page/artist whose work resonates with me. Each page gives a short visual and/or philosophical insight into each "artist work". The author writes it in an artistic prose filled with description. I recommend reading a book on modern art theory before picking up to book to maximize studying each page if that is your goal to such question like ; is this painting or is this art? I enjoy this book for its color pages and short summary and can be completed in a few days. On the downside, it is difficult to learn and know which artist to study more of from such a summary book without knowing the theory or what the artist intended as they rarely give that away. First impression is never lasting impression.

I have "The Art Book" by Phaidon and referred to it many times over the years. "The 20th Century Art Book" is an excellent companion and serves as a wonderful reference book to the world of contemporary art. It is small, easy to carry around, packed with great information on some of the most influential artists of this century and explains why these particular artists had such an influence on the world of art today. It is by no means an exclusive and detailed critique of art, rather a great general overview. "The Art Book" and "The 20th Century Art Book" are the best, littlest coffee books you can purchase.

This book, while not quite a coffee table size is significantly sized so that the reader/viewer can appreciate the wonderfully rich color printing that is true to life and affixed to a very nice paper stock. This is a book that you will open again and again when the need comes for a generous feast of artistic eye candy.

“Fat Girl Skinny” is instantly engaging, constantly entertaining, and superbly written. I applaud Mrs. Archer’s courage as she transmogrifies her personal experiences into a profoundly introspective, yet irreverently funny, cliffhanging page-turner. Who knew weight loss could be this captivating?

I loved this book. Amye is witty, funny, and brutally honest. Her writing style is terrific. I laughed and cried. Any one that went through low self esteem, or lack of self confidence issues will relate. You will be cheering her on from page one, and you won't want to put this down.

Loved this book! Amye has a way with words and let's us "in" like you're talking with a good friend. Amye Archer is so open and honest with a great wit and sense of humor. The book speaks about Amye's struggles in young adulthood, from a failed marriage to dating and Amye's battle of the bulge - all in no-holds barred style! Who hasn't gone through embarrassing times in their life? This book has a way of making you feel it's OKAY to be who you are, lumps, bruises and all, and in the end, it will all work out. As a fan of Amye's blog "The Fat Girl Blog", I was looking forward to this book and was not disappointed! You won't be either! It's a great weekend or beach read - you'll get immersed in this book and won't be able to put it down!
