rA comprehensive overview of the cruise industry? Certainly not ...

A comprehensive overview of the cruise industry? Certainly not. The book comes in a disguise of a Research but a closer look reveals that it does not fullfil its expectations. In my opinion it is an overview for travel agent employees and cruise staff, definitely not a university research book. Some examples of the hair-raising inaccuracies and mistakes: Norway was rebuilt as a diesel-driven ship (p.51 and 172). Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven never replaced the engines. Milller (2009) quotes in his book SS France / Norway (by the way SS Norway means Steamship!) Norway`s captain in 1995 "The main engines were still the same from the 1979/80 conversion; p. 60). I am a resident of Bremerhaven and have all the newspaper articles of Norway`s visit in the shipyard in the 80s and 90s. No mentioning of any changes in the engine room. That took place with QE2 from summer 1986 to April 1987 (I witnessed the conversion in my home town). More mistakes? Let's go ahead: the Berlin runs in a show named "Traumshiffe". What should that be "Dremschipps"? It's "Traumschiff"! And the company is not Deilmann Reederie, but "Reederei" (p. 38); terrorism took place on Achille Lauro in 1885 (it was in 1985; p. 186), Arandora Star mutates into "Andorra Star" (p. 26), Canberra took place in a new Falkland War in 1972 (a brainchild by Cartwright?, p. 187), Oriana was built at Myer Weft (Fort Myers?), instead of Meyer Werft (pp. 193, 196), and the shipyard has shifted to an obscure town of Pappenburg (it's Papenburg, Pappe means cardboard in German). Let's stop this endless list here. It should illustrate where the book belongs: on the coffee table, not on a scholar's bookshelf!

Markedly better than Ghouls of the Miskatonic

Please see my review of Ghouls of the Miskatonic for the context of fiction based on the role playing game Arkham Horror by Fantasy Flight Games.

Ghouls of the Miskatonic was a serviceable novelization of Arkham Horror game play. It was diverting without being memorable at all. Dance of the Damned is so much better than that. Alan Bligh has a good deal of experience writing scenarios for role playing games, and perhaps has written a few short stories, although I have never encountered him before; this is his first novel. Well he has done himself proud. Dance of the Damned transcends the source material and ends up being a corking good read in its on right.

Some housekeeping: like all of the Fantasy Flight Game novelizations, this is a mass market trade paperback, currently listed for $8.99 (I recollect when I was a kid and such books were less than a dollar, while now this price seems pretty reasonable...but I digress). The excellent cover art is by FFG's resident creative genius, Anders Finer. The text runs from page 7 to 329. A brief note but informative about the author is provided; they should do the same for the artist. Editing was tight; I don't recollect any typos.

Daisy Walker (an investigator from the rpg) works as a librarian and investigator at the Orne Library of Miskatonic University, although she seems so much more competent than that (why only becomes clear much later). She is contacted by a friend for her student days in Kingsport, a very worldly and somewhat wealthy Annabel Fawn. Annabel is in trouble; her boyfriend has vanished under mysterious circumstances and has left her with a very small but very potent artifact. Annabel needs a confidant and somewhere to lay low, and comes to Daisy for help in Arkham. In the meantime, tough PI Tony Morgan (another stalwart from the rpg) has just been involved in a rather bloody showdown and ends up in the employ of Mr. Shawcross, a shadowy power broker from Copperhead Industries. Mr. Shawcross makes Tony an offer he can't refuse, basically to track down Maxwell Cormac. It turns out Cormac is Annabel's boyfriend and he has taken something of great interest to Shawcross. You can see how the plot threads intersect. Several groups are trying to get Annabel's artifact, as Daisy struggles to make sense of everything including her own damaged memory, while Tony is hot on their trail. It rapidly becomes clear that powers beyond normal are being exercised (or are exercising their influence on our plane), and relief of human suffering is not one of their primary aims. The plot moves along propulsively, converging in escalating violence in a series of encounters in Kingsport.

I very much liked this book. The prose was crisp, the characters came alive and the dialogue was quite well written. I never thought I was reading a scenario from a rpg; the book worked well as a novel. I found it hard to believe Mr. Bligh is a novice at this. I particularly liked the vivid physical descriptions of Kingsport. The major action sequences were appropriately horrific. The cliff hanger ending (this is a trilogy after all) did leave me wanting more.

There are some things I didn't particularly like, although they did not put me off. For example, the Terrible Old Man of Kingsport puts in a few appearances as some sort of mysterious wizard of unclear motivation or allegiance. I could have lived without that; I guess it was added to connect the reader to HPL's Kingsport.

My bottom line is I am happy to recommend this to fans of Cthulhu mythos fiction in general, not just fans of Arkham Horror. I am looking forward to future Cthulhu mythos works by Mr. Bligh, not just the next two books in the Lord of Nightmares trilogy. This is a book I would like to get in a larger limited edition format, heavily illustrated by Mr. Finer.

Not bad, but not great.

This relatively short book spends a large amount of time setting-the-scene and ends rather abruptly. (Much like many Arkham horror games now that I think about it).

The author tends toward over-description and perhaps over-flexes his vocabulary muscles a bit to much, however the story moves along very well after the first 100 pages. There are a few moments reading where I really could not put it down, so kudos there.

Without spoiling the ending, the end is more abrupt and feels it was somewhat rushed to complete. Nevertheless, I will be purchasing the second volume.

It's a light read and a good first effort for a new author. I look forward to seeing the series develop.

A fun read

I picked this book up when it first came out and read it quickly. I always love a good quick story especially one related to cthulhu. The story flows well, the characters are developed enough to enjoy them and the writer keeps a sense of mystery and the unknown as the story unfolds. While not a classical cthulhu tale it is a fun read and well worth your time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good urban fantasy or cthulhu style adventure tale.

Appropriate textbook for middle school or low-level high school only

This is a good, well-written textbook with a lot of great illustrations and diagrams. However, the book is written on a very basic level, and only provides a very superficial coverage to current environmental science topics. I would not recommend this textbook for upper-level high school students. For teachers, this textbook also includes a resource CD with Powerpoints, tests, quizzes, and other worksheets.

This Teacher's Edition is a better resource than the current text I am forced to use. My students love the readability factor, clarified graphics, and included case studies which we use for discussion, closure, and kick-off activities.

Great text for high school environmental science course

Well done. Logical layout. Beautiful pictures. Mostly balanced as to political views of the subject. Is not rabidly against man's existence on the planet, thankfully. Very enjoyable reading. Expensive, but the nice binding means it could last for several years and usages.

"Maps" will become a part of your vocabulary

With Maps of Meaning, Jordan Peterson has accomplished an astonishing synthesis and exposition of Western thought. I've been digging around in this stuff, from psychology to philosophy to ancient history to science, for 37 years and you can take my word for it.

For me, the only work that has been nearly as fruitful as Dr Peterson's is Leonard Bernstein's Norton lectures on music. But then music doesn't have to contend with "meaning".

Prof. Peterson's book blends neuroscience, evolutionary biology and mythology to explain how we human construct and navigate our reality, definitely worth reading for those who seek existential wisdom.

We need to make the effort to understand the concepts in this book.

Peterson has integrated science, mytholgy, theology, sociology, psychology, anthropoligy, religion and much more into a comprehensive world view of the mind and spirit. It may seem to be an intimidating read for non-academics (like myself) but he has structured the book to separate the summary sections for each major concept from the detailed discussion. We need many more thinkers like Peterson who can connect and integrate the important ideas from so many areas of narrow and intense study into such a broad and important view. And we need to make the effort to understand and appreciate the genious of the few who are capable of this task.

The photographs in this book are pleasant enough, but the information is frequently incorrect. Coles and Budwig are following up their previous poorly-penned book with more of the same. Bead research is accomplished by people who dedicate years to this pursuit. Merely publishing a few photographs with some garbled and incorrect information may be entertaining (especially for anyone who doesn't know any better), but is a total waste of time for anyone who is seriously interested in the subject. Wim Van Hecke, PhD, is an international expert in MRI analysis and advanced neuroimaging techniques and applications. An academic engineer by training with two Masters degrees in applied biomedical engineering and neuroimaging, and a PhD in diffusion MRI�analysis, Dr. Van Hecke presently divides his time between pursuing research in advanced DTI analysis at Antwerp University Hospital and managing the business operations of icoMetrix, a rapidly expanding medical image analysis service that he co-founded to make state-of-the-art image analysis accessible to all.

Louise Emsell, PhD, is a translational neuroimaging expert and educator. Presently based at the University Psychiatry Centre (UPC) and Translational MRI departments at the KU Leuven University Hospital in Belgium, Dr. Emsell has two Masters degrees in Science (Medical Physics/Medicinal Chemistry) and Education, and a PhD in Psychiatry. Her award-winning postdoctoral research combines many advanced neuroimaging techniques, including state-of-the-art diffusion MRI, to study the development and evolution of psychopathology.

Stefan Sunaert, MD, PhD, is a Consultant Neuroradiologist, Professor of Neuroradiology and internationally-renowned expert in all aspects of clinical and academic MR neuroimaging. Presently head of the Translational MRI Department at KU Leuven, and based in the Radiology Department of the KU Leuven University Hospital in Belgium, Professor Sunaert has published widely in the field of Neuroradiology and has received numerous awards for his academic research. Additionally, he is a highly-respected clinician and educator who has organised numerous advanced neuroimaging courses and workshops at conferences across the world.
