Not good....

This book is bad.
In equation developments, it uses cartesian coordinates in a funky way. It changes them! This might not be a problem, but this book uses coordinate systems that don't follow the right-hand rule. For me this was very disturbing, because throughout my education the right-hand rule for coordinate systems was God's word.
Another thing is the example problems. When the book shows you the solution, it jumps right into numbers, without even showing you the symbolic development, or what numbers represent what variables. It expects you to infer this from the units!
N.B. I've only read the first 50 pages or so of this book, and my frustration led me to write this review. My opinions aren't supported with a complete sense of the book. Then again, the fact that even the elementary, development part of the book frustrates me could show just how bad this book will become in the latter parts.

Worth so much more than what they are charging

As a self-coached Ironman athlete I spend a lot of time reading and learning from different sources. Endurance Corner represents some of the best thinking on Ironman training and lifestyle. Whenever I see a new EC article I immediately read it and learn something that I can put into action. When I saw that there was an EC book collecting the articles in one easy to read place (and revising them as well to add new information) I bought it without hesitation. They are a trusted source for triathlon training and lifestyle.

If you seek objective, factually informed, data driven and considered discussion about Triathlon training then there is nothing to match the Endurance Corner team.
There are no perspectives here skewed by personal interests or ego or vanity. There are no opinions here formed without substance, experience, testing and data.
The content is probably available for free on their website. But the convenience of having it compiled into a 'book' is easily worth the money
I wish they would release a Volume 2/3/4/5 and more!

quality advice on triathlon

I follow the team at endurance corner, since they really focus on how to organise triathlon when not training i.e. how to be a triathlete without getting divorced or fired etc etc.

THis collates the top articles , and is well worth a read! THere are a few topics that are for the advanced guys, but in general it could be read by anyone keen on triathlon. Gordo keeps it real and opens his life experiences for us all - follow everything that he writes, he never disappoints.

The 26th Prey novel

Marlys Purdy is a middle-aged woman who wouldn’t strike casual observers as a likely murderer -- unless they happen to catch her displaying her rage. Having lost a farm and a husband, and facing a new financial disaster after recovering from the first one, Marlys has grievances. She also has mental health issues. Marlys’ son Cole inherited the family tendency toward paranoia, and his service in Iraq only contributed to his disordered thinking.

Marlys wants to kill Michaela Bowden, the probable Democratic presidential candidate, who will soon be in Iowa campaigning in advance of the caucus. Marlys is equally disdainful of the Republican candidates, who (in Marlys’ view) favor bankers rather than little people. Marlys thinks that removing Bowden from the Democratic race would pave the way for the governor of Minnesota, a self-made millionaire whose Democratic primary campaign is based on his claim to be on the side of common folk.

The governor does not think he could win the general election but believes he can wrangle his way into a vice presidential candidacy if Bowden wins the nomination. When the governor hears remarks suggesting that Bowden’s life might be threatened, he turns to Lucas Davenport, who no longer works in law enforcement. Instead, Lucas does whatever needs doing whenever the governor needs it done, provided he gets paid. The governor wants Davenport to identify and to stop the threat to Bowden's life. And with that setup, a new novel in the Prey series is born.

Extreme Prey is essentially an investigative procedural. Davenport investigates some wacky Iowans as well as some Iowans who used to be active in alternative politics but have mellowed with age. John Sandford makes it easy for the reader to understand why political issues, coupled with the government’s approach to homeland security, sometimes feeds the delusions of people who are certain that the government is out to get them and that government officials are eavesdropping on their telephone calls.

I haven’t read every book in the Prey series but I’ve enjoyed the ones that I’ve read. This one moves quickly, with an occasional action scene providing a break from the ongoing investigation. The novel doesn’t create much tension or excitement, however, until the final fifty pages, when Sandford unloads with an intense, extended scene that speeds the story to its conclusion. And while much of the plot seems predictable, the assassination scheme is quite clever. Compared to other Prey novels I’ve read, Extreme Prey is no worse than average, which makes it pretty good.

Not at the Author's Best

John Sandford has always been one of my favorite crime/mystery/thriller writers, and I like both of his series main characters. When someone asks me to give them the names of some good mystery writers, Sandford is always mentioned in the top 3. This 3 star rating is 2 stars less than I've ever given him.
First and most simply, the book is too long. Not too long because it's over 400 pages and it's "just" a mystery novel (this has become trendy since Harlan Coben started doing that), but because it's too long for the story it tells. Way too long. The police procedural aspect just bogs down repeatedly, and there are so many characters and locales flying around it makes for a dizzy, and occasionally unclear plotline.
What works best here is that Sandford has tapped into contemporary politics, the darkness in the souls of so many people in the contemporary political landscape. He has a real grip on that, and it lifts the narrative intermittently, providing some excellent dramatic tension.
There is also a turn to a new situation for Lucas right at the end that is a fantastic teaser.
I'll still be reading every book he writes, and hope another one comes soon.

Another good read in the Prey series

Another good read in the Prey series, but not so much that I was compelled to read it in one sitting. Other reviewers have pretty much covered the meat of the story, that it takes place in Iowa, for the most part. I missed the Minnesota and Wisconsin connections, though the story starts out at our hero's cabin in northern WI---with him driving his female carpenter nuts. He then gets a call from the MN governor's office and he's off to Iowa. I was disappointed that there were no Letty chapters, only a reference to her being away at college. Missed her interaction with Lucas (hoping for a spin off series centered on Letty). One of the reviewers commented that there were too many references to Flowers---I didn't notice any more than what we usually read in the Prey books. The books are centered in a relatively small area of the midwest and the cops and investigators no doubt cross paths in reality, so I don't find fault with Flowers' name popping up here and there. In fact I'd be disappointed if I didn't hear something about that effing Flowers.
The whole time I was reading the book, and Lucas and his cohorts were tracking down the radicals, something was bothering me about their search. I'll have to read the book again, but seems that the towns in Iowa where they were searching were quite small. Having lived for 20 years in a small town of 300 people I can tell you that in a town that size (and the surrounding rural areas) everyone know everyone, and their political affiliations, especially if they have radical leanings. So instead of trying to track down 182 people from a list (of radicals) given to him by another radical, why not take the descriptions he had and ask at the local grocery store, diner, gas station, tavern, post office, etc. Those are the five core components of small towns where everyone shows up eventually. Something else that bothered me...SPOILER ALERT...don't know if Lucas is slipping but it sure seemed to take him a long time to suspect a bomb might be the attackers' weapon of choice. In this day and age, with all the bombings and scares around the world, and knowing that one of the attackers was an Iraq veteran, I just felt that Lucas, or someone on his team, should have thought of it a lot sooner. Overall, liked the book, didn't love it, but I'll read it again.

Great reading and useful resource

This is a very informative collection of essays on a variety of ancient religions. Although diverse, there are many fascinating commonalities to many of these religions. Part of the enjoyment of the reading is tying threads together in otherwise standalone essays, which average about 50 pages.

Sacrifice, for example, is a major ritual component of almost all the religions. What North says about Roman religion could equally apply to most of the religions: the problem of scholars cynically thinking of religion as a tool for rulers and the aristocracy, skepticism about the gods, or the lack of the phenomenon of 'conversion' due to acceptance of the reality of a potentially endless number of gods.

You find parallels in unlikely places. The ritual slaughter of war captives in ancient European religion calls to mind the 'herem' attested in ancient Israel and Moab. The Zhou kings were called 'sons of [the god] Heaven', recalling Egyptian royal ideology where the pharaohs were sons of god. The Indu civilization by the best interpretations had ritual baths in their homes, perhaps for purity, as in later Judaism, and apparently knew of some version of the Gilgamesh epic. We associate philosophy in the West with Greek thinkers, but there flourished in ancient China philosophers of equal antiquity and insight. The ancient Chinese remarkably even seemed to have conceived of the possibility of bodily resurrection, apart from Zoroastrian influence.

But all the religions are unique in many ways and the authors do a collectively fair job of sticking to the prescribed topical outline, though not always in the same order and with uneven coverage, which is mainly a source issue, not one of competence. There is also a welcome conscious effort to discuss the religion of everyday people and not just those represented in 'official' texts. Here archeology is of paramount value.

I have a few gripes. It is difficult to follow some authors on the dating of aspects of the religions because they do not name or do not discuss the nature of the sources relative to the specific tradition or aspect they are discussing. Most of the essays have good maps, but several lack pictures even when there is definite material cultural evidence available. Some essays do not quote or infrequently quote primary sources, although they are often mentioned. More direct quotes from the primary sources when they are textual of course would have been appreciated in these cases.

I hope in an updated edition Hinnells will remedy some of these defects and also include a chapter on Zoroastrianism. The essay on Israel could have probably been discarded or discussed in a broader essay on West Semitic religion including Ugarit (which receives its own lengthy chapter and makes many biblical connections anyway). And for the life of me, it seems some of these scholars cannot spell 'worshiped/worshiper' correctly, rendering it with two 'p's'. How does an expert on religion not get this word right? Very funny, though of course a venial offense and not a serious criticism.

But the book is fairly broad in scope in contrast to, say Johnston 2007 , where only Mediterranean religions are discussed, i.e., those perceived to be directly relevant to the Western and Judeo-Christian traditions. It was a pleasure to read something about ancient China, for example, in the same book where Mesopotamian religion is discussed. There is adequate bibliography at the end of each chapter and an extremely useful and comprehensive index.

I'm happy to have this resource in my collection and with a few significant revisions in a subsequent edition it could be an unbeatable resource for the price in paperback. I learned much in general and am very pleased.

There were dominant styles and trends throughout Japan, but also those peculiar to specifc regions, such as the Kanto (Edo) and the Kamigata (Osaka and Kyoto) and, more remotely, Nagasaki.
