Over the last 20 years, Santiago Calatrava has made literally thousands of drawings and paintings and more than a hundred sculptures. Many of his drawings show the human body - often in motion - alone, or in groups, or in an architectural context. Others show preliminary ideas which lead to constructions, details, sculptures, and buildings.

This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing the significance of his artistic work as the basis for his architectural designs. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. Many of the themes and forms which Calatrava investigates and develops on this level are subsequently transformed into sculptures and go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports, museums and even dining tables.

This volume analyses how Calatrava's creative ideas ripen and develop, from the initial drawings, to the sculptures, finally attaining completion in the realised buildings. At the same time, it examines the interfaces between the fine arts, engineering and architecture.

Disappointing

Being a designer myself, I am very much interested in the thought process and preliminary drawings made by one of the great recent names in the field. I was definitely looking for inspirational drawings and to peer over the shoulder of a great in a similar field to see their process.

What I found instead was the disappointingly simple marks of a pretty amateur water colourist. I'm sure that this might be inspirational and interesting to people outside of visual arts and design, but compared to Arkitekture by Zaha Hadid, which has beautiful 3d renderings, models, pictures of her abstract scultptural work etc, it's woefully inadequate.

I won't be buying another book on his work without seeing it in the flesh and getting a good idea of what's really in there.

A Good P-Chem Supplement!

Everyone knows P-Chem is one of the harder chemistry courses out there, and one of the main reasons is that most of the P-Chem textbooks are so poorly written. Tough this book is not a textbook, in some ways it surpasses the major P-Chem textbooks in use out there because it takes complicated p-chem concepts and breaks them down into simpler concepts.

Like I said earlier, this is not really a textbook - in fact, it is more like a workbook. Each section begins with descriptive information about a subject followed by related questions that stack on each other that as you answer them lead you to understanding the larger concept at-hand.

This book is great for studying for exams - or at least the ones I took in P-Chem II and the American Chemical Society (ACS) final exam.

The reason I gave it four stars instead of five was that sometimes it asks you to draw conclusions that are a little too far apart based on the information you're given, and I think the author (Moog) might be forgetting what it's like to be learning this for the first time. It might help to also obtain the solutions manual (ISBN: 978-0618308576 or 0618308571). I had it and found that looking at some of the problem's solutions helped me to understand what direction they were trying to lead me.

All-in-all a pretty useful book, and an improvement when it comes to P-Chem resources.

Very good main text

My school uses this as the main text book, we work through it in small groups and it works well. It covers all the main points in Physical Chemistry, and does a very good job with it. We have another text for supplementary, but this does the job by itself. It's very informative, and has some little light points and jokes. Very good.

Pages 317-341 were missing from my workbook as if they were never printed. Being this is a workbook, I needed all the pages for homework and now I cannot complete them unless I hand-write everything from someone else for the 30 page chunk that is missing.

indispensable for would-be med students/doctors

This is a very useful book for any high school student who is thinking of becoming a doctor or even for middle school students. It would also be helpful for young people already in medical school who want tips about how to successfully jump through all the hurdles and chose the right specialty. This book is like having about a dozen mentors who tell you everything they went through to get into some excellent medical schools and what they did to stay in and succeed, including right up to the point that they entered their professional practice. It has so much valuable and in some cases "inside" information such as how one school differs from another, how to best study for some of the main exams, how to prepare for a medical school and position yourself to get in. Perhaps most important, it explains to the reader what being a doctor--and a medical student--actually involved. Some young people will read this book and decide it is not for them. In which case they have saved tons of money and time. Those who decide it is for them will have gained some really valuable information that will help them in planning their futures.

If there’s anything I’ve learned after mentoring over 60 silver and bronze players it’s that anyone, and I mean ANYONE has the potential to become a Diamond level player within a very short time, even if still new to League.

In spite of all the information available online, the majority of League’s community still struggle to achieve their goals in Ranked. Nowadays, there are so many Twitch streams, YouTube channels and websites dedicated to teaching the game and yet the results are just not there for the majority. Improving from Silver to Gold is nice, but this is so much less than what progress should look like for most. Being a teacher in real life, the question I got absorbed in was: What prevents people from mastering the game to the level they want, despite them having access to all the information they need? We are talking about hundreds of thousands of players that play ranked. That’s a lot of people. Why is it that so many folks may spend weeks and even months watching Challenger streams, play League for 5+ hours a day and still not improve at the rate they could?

This inefficiency is not due to the people playing the game or the information they learn from. It all has to do with how effective learning takes place. A person’s ability to learn from a piece of information is enhanced only to the degree to which they can relate to it at that specific moment. This is the factor that dictates how fast one improves over a period of time. Here is an analogy. If I were to pick two different gold 3 players for example, one may assume that they are at a similar spot on the tree of game knowledge. They are both gold 3, so they must be… right? No, their spot on that tree is unique, as is the combination of things they know and don’t know, it’s just that the net result happens to be the same. Depending on which leafs and branches of the tree they have, if they were both to be traditionally taught the same thing in the same exact way, the result wouldn’t be optimal for both. The key to overcoming those limitations is through teaching the game in the most relatable way, by utilizing the functions of the left and right brain hemispheres SIMULTANEOUSLY through associations and other learning techniques. What most people don’t realize is that their progress is not only limited by what they don’t know, but also the unconscious habits and pathways they’ve created and CONTINUE to create each time they play. Improving at the fastest rate is achieved by also following a daily practice routine that revolves around repeated behaviors that create the right habits, while unlearning the wrong ones. Basically, you transform as a player and it takes about a month.

So here is my attempt to change things for the better and have a positive impact on the community. I wrote this book specifically for new and old players that struggle to reach Diamond. It’s updated and relevant to the current Season 6. Everyone that learns from it should be able to reach Diamond within 30 days of practicing no matter what their starting point is. I stand behind my statement that ANY “low elo” player has the potential to get to Diamond in a short time when taught correctly. As far as the time commitment required, playing 2-4 games a day and dedicating about an hour for the method described in Chapter 9 is plenty. The method is designed specifically for people with a job/school/other real life activities who cannot dedicate 10 hours a day to League.

Detailed Review as a Plat 2 player

Here is my detailed review as a plat 2 player. I will include the things I like and don't like about the book.

I like that the author goes quite deep on the psychological aspects of the game. That's maybe 30-40% of the book. There is a lot of thought-provoking commentary there, especially the stuff about the subconscious mind and why things happen in game the way they do. As far as the technical aspects, its a little bit too detailed at some places and you are not likely to remember everything if you don't frequently revise the book. But again, my view is as a Platinum 2 player and I am a lot ahead in game knowledge compared to others. If you are in Silver or Gold I would suggest that you learn the game knowledge part by heart. Gold players are the worst because they are very stubborn and convinced they know it all and this is why it's the biggest elo hell.

The things I really like are the different described scenarios in regards to the objectives and the way they should be prioritized. It's quite detailed and concrete and pretty much every possible scenario is listed for when to prioritize or give every objective. I can tell you that in Platinum like 9 out of 10 games are lost because people mess this up. All the pages dedicated to the aspects of laning are just a must to understand. I think the small things described are the difference between winning lane and stomping a lane really hard. The 2 questions in Chapter 9 and the whole game review strat are a prety solid approach. This is quite different from what I was doing and is much better, but I will apply it as soon as I finish with my exams.

The thing that I dislike is that at two instances the author speaks a little bit too directly for my liking when he describes certain scenarios or mistakes people are making. But again, that's just my two cents.

Overall I am happy with the value I got from the book. It added a lot to what I already know and made me think about things in a deeper way. That's honestly enough for me. My advice to people that want to use the book properly is to actually re-read it often and apply what it says. Once you cover all the technical aspects and learn them really well, Chapter 9 is where you want to put the most focus on after that. It's very easy to overlook things in League and the more open you are the faster you will make progress.

This book is quite detailed, I like that there is so much information condensed in one source and it’s a convenient way to refer to it when needed. I find all of it practical and well thought out. Personally I find all this volume of info a little bit overwhelming right now so I would recommend that you read like a chapter a day. Or take big breaks. For example there are 36 different concepts he explains just for the laning phase chapter. I think it’s the chapter I will put most focus on for now because like the author says there is a difference between just winning lane,and stomping lane and carrying the game. So yeah.

Also the chapter about teamfighting is where I would recommend everyone put a lot of focus on. The risk assessment stuff, positioning, team comps and all the details about how to teamfight is really key. I barely lose lane when I play but my teamfighting needs a lot of improvement so I will try to get most of these areas up.

Honestly the volume is absolutely huge and don’t expect to grasp everything from the first reading. Its funny because out of the things the author says not to do in chapter 8 I’ve legit done all of it in 80% of my games maybe. And I am gold 1 (EUW). Like, I literally started laughing until I realized its not funny at all. But yeah, I would suggest skimming the book first and then reading it one chapter at a time. For god’s sake, don’t try to read it all at once, you heard it from me first. It would be really nice if I will have the discipline to actually apply all this. Overall, a solid source, really good stuff. The direct tone used on a few of the concepts doesn’t bother me. I actually prefer it because it makes me think more critically about what I should do when I play. But I guess that’s individual.

Very useful for a newer player such as myself.

I got this book a month ago and have been reading it a lot, it includes things like freezing lane and how to practice taking advantage of certain mechanics. I haven't played ranked yet and I don't plan to until I feel I have a firm grasp on about 90% of the concepts in this book. But I'll tell you this; I can feel myself getting better every time I play because of following the advice in here. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to climb in ranked. I started about 2 months ago and if anyone has any questions for me about how this book has helped or wants to see how I've progressed, my ign is UnrealContender on the NA server.

Good short-story

This was an interesting story. To be perfectly honest (which is a little embarrassing), I bought this kindle book based on the title. I thought it would really contain actual "safety tips for living alone." It does not, however! This is a short story -- not a full length book -- about some members of the Air Force who were stationed to a tower off of New York, when a storm hits.

But while the story ended up being nothing like I'd expected, I still loved it. It's interesting, and it's very, very well written.

The perfect storm for Texas Tower No. 4

Although the Cold war ended almost a quarter of a century ago, stories are still coming out about some of the events and incidents that occurred during that era when the world was poised on the brink of nuclear war. One of those stories involves the tragic loss of an early warning radar station - Texas Tower No. 4 - that was located in the waters off Long Island, New York. Although it was known that the tower was unsafe and could collapse during a bad storm, the military's delay in evacuating the tower's personnel resulted in all 28 men on the tower losing their lives. The facts of the incident are well known, but author Jim Shepard puts a human face on the tragedy by focusing on four of the tower's crewmen and their wives during those last hours of the tower's existence. Using the recollections of four of the men's wives who spoke with their husbands by phone in the hours before the tower was swept away, Shepard describes their last conversations and their increasing frustrations and fears as it became clear that the tower and its crew were doomed. It's a poignant story of husbands and wives' last conversations, knowing that they would never see each other again.

In a story about the length of an expanded magazine article, the author has done a fine job of relating the tragedy of the last hours of Texas Tower No. 4 and its crew.
