Good Writing For A Not Particularly Appealing Hero

Detective Sergeant Herbert Green of the Special Branch comes to Willesden Borough CID to ask Inspector Yardbird for help. They're trying to find Cecil Ramscar, age 45, who grew up there and reportedly has returned. They suspect he's working on a political kidnapping.

Green tells Yardbird, "I think that in a way the clumsier the inquiries the better. If they can be conducted in such a way as to stir up Mr. Ramscar, worry him, make him break cover or play his hand hurriedly, then that might be what we want.... Have you got somebody like that, somebody who will set up the ripples? Somebody really clumsy?"

And that is how Dangerous Davies, so nicknamed because he isn't, gets the file on Cecil Ramscar. It's a thick file, and some of the earliest papers are from Ramscar's possible involvement in a 25 year-old cold case. In 1951, Celia Norris, age 17, disappeared. Going against orders, Davies decides to solve the Norris case. It's going to cost him.

There are positives about "The Last Detective", the first in the Dangerous Davies series, originally published in 1976. There is humor, both dry and laugh-out-loud. The writing is good, and descriptions evocative: "Davies went out hurriedly. The lines of cars at the back lay inert. There was only a motor cyclist, bowed under the egg of his helmet, kicking his machine to a start."

But this Davies is not very likeable. And I didn't appreciate the late-30's Davies and his interlude with a 17 year old girl. If you've seen the TV series, starring Peter Davison, the book's character is not as appealing. I liked the TV series, but this is the first of the books I've read, and I'm not in a rush to try another.

For me, "The Last Detective" is 3.4 stars, rounded down to 3 stars = OK.

Enjoyed the series

I watched the TV series first and thought I would try the books. I like the TV series better than the book but I could never figure out why everyone was so hard on Davies. Davies is a clumsy, careless cop who somehow bungles his way into solving an old murder. Some people might find his social faux pas and compromising situations funny. I found them uncomfortably embarrassing, perhaps because they hit a little too close to home.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I look forward to more from this author. The main character is very likable and the plot a little different but interesting.

About the Author

Marlene A. Bumgarner is a college instructor and consultant who works with schools and afterschool programs to develop high quality experiences for children and staff. For many years she was a single parent and depended on school age programs to provide her four children safe and nurturing care while she was at work. As the need for afterschool programs grew in her community and the nation she was drawn into the world of lawmaking, fundraising, and advocating for the needs of school age programs.�She developed courses and certificates at her community college and participated in professional development workshops and seminars resulting in more than 50 colleges doing the same. Both personally and professionally, Dr. Bumgarner continues to be committed to improving the quality of out of school time for all children and is a frequent conference speaker.

Mary Hoshiko Haughey has worked with children and youth in YMCA program and administration for 37 years. Mary is currently the Vice President of Operations for Youth Development and Social Responsibility with the YMCA of Silicon Valley. In this role, Mary provides direct leadership and support to over 105 child care, after school, and day camp programs throughout Silicon Valley. Mary is passionate about education and uses innovative YMCA programming to help close the achievement/opportunity gap through after school and summer programs. She builds collaborative relationships with school districts to create out-of-school time education and enrichment programs, manages federal grants in health, nutrition, food security and afterschool, develops staff resources and materials, writes foundation grants, and supervises the youth development department. Mary is active at the state and national level in achievement gap work, afterschool and summer food policy and speaks at national conferences on these topics. Mary has been a child development college instructor for 13 years and is passionate about working with students in the child and youth development fields.

Both philological and mathematical work are included. The essays shed new light on all of the known textual sources, including the omen series Enuma Anu Enlil, which contains omens from as far back as the early second or even third millennium, and the earliest personal horoscopes, from about 400 B.C., as well as the Astronomical Diaries, ephemerides, and other observational and mathematical texts. One essay concerns astronomical papyri that confirm the extensive transmission of Babylonian methods into Greek; a study of Ptolemy's lunar theory suggests that Ptolemy relied more on his own observations than previously thought; and an analysis of Theon's commentary on Ptolemy's Handy Tables shows that Theon explicated their meaning both conscientiously and competently.Contributors : Asger Aaboe, Alan C. Perfect alternative to refresher course in algebra/mathematics

Really good book for someone who took college-level Calculus few years ago but need to brush up on the concepts for job interviews, preparation for graduate school or for fun. What makes this book so informative is its easy-to-follow format allowing the reader to ease into the more complex concepts of mathematical methods. For example, it starts with very basic concepts of calculus (i.e. differential calculus, optimization problems etc.) and ends with advanced theoretical concepts such as multi-variable calculus. Similarly, it begins with basic level of algebra and ends with intermediate linear algebra. Assuming that you have the discipline of studying periodically, this book is the best alternative to taking a refresher course in college-level algebra/mathematics.

Excellent explaination of the modern American worldview

SUCH a great introduction to the prevailing worldview of America today. Bush does a fine job of demonstrating why testing all truth by the scientific method is not a good idea. Modern day Americans would reject historical truth if they cannot test it scientifically. They reject logic when the logic isn't able to be tested with the scientific method. And this is ridiculous. The Advancement is a great book - and not JUST for this reason. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It's a very easy read for any intellectual, but the points, though simple to understand, are quite valid.
