Amazing Resource!

If you are just getting started. It definitely takes you step by step. I really liked the DVD too! It is nice clips from talks Richard has given. It was like paying to sit at a conference or lecture only it was "free". It's a great companion for the book. I am happy that I purchased them both together.

Excellent book explaining nuts and bolts of organic farming as a profitable business. Author clarifies how profitability can be achieved and how he personally organized himself to do so, what procedures, equipment he uses and his approach to various problems and tasks.

It is 75% efficient farming paperwork discussion and 25% efficient organic farming production discussion

The subject is a farm of many acres but my objective is only couple acres of organically managed production for personal use. Regardless, I want to be as efficient as possible in production, and in the limited amount of paperwork that I’ll need to do. The paperwork discussions are detailed with examples that I can directly apply. The farming production is the most detailed that I’ve found, to me was the most interesting, and includes photographs of the implements required, what they’re called, how they operate – all with an emphasis on how they contribute to efficient production. I’m ordering Richard’s other book “Farms with a Future...” now hoping for more discussions on production.

About the Author

Beginning in 2005, Norbert Majerus has implemented a principles-based lean product development process at the three global innovation centers of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, first in Akron, Ohio, and then in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg, and Hanau, Germany. For nearly a decade, he has been Goodyear’s lean champion in research and development.

Mr. Majerus, born and raised in Luxembourg, began his career�at Goodyear in 1979 with responsibility for materials development, aircraft tires, and competitor benchmarking. In 1983, he moved to Akron to start a "short assignment" in innovative products, which continues to this day. During that time, he was a recipient of discretionary funding for a revolutionary new product and manufacturing process, and he earned more than 60 patents and trade secrets (patentable ideas that the company chose not to patent).

Further assignments in Akron have included innovative processes; new tire development and project manager for North American, Asian, and European OEM customers; corporate benchmarking; design and test standards; activity-based R&D accounting; ISO/QS certification; and more.

Majerus acquired a six sigma master black belt in 2003 and a lean master black belt in 2005. He holds a master’s degree in chemistry from the Universitaet des Saarlandes, Saarbruecken, Germany.

Where the rubber meets the road...

It is rare, indeed, for someone with so much real-world experience improving one company's systems of product development to divulge such a public gift as this book delivers. I appreciate the candid story of Norbert's leadership journey at Goodyear to bring lean thinking into the product development space. Most remarkably, he uses his story to teach others, like me, the principled way to do it, too. Even having a decade of my own lean product development learning and experience, I dog-eared, highlighted, and double underlined practical and actionable content in every chapter. Read it slowly, read it twice...it is seasoned advice. Thanks to Goodyear and Norbert I'll be accelerating with better traction.

Author of Western studies such as A Place To Grow: Women in the American West (Harlan Davidson, 1992), the author here provides not only a biography of Oakley but also an evaluation of her legend and influence-a woman who sought economic equality and recognition for women in a male-dominated profession, but who, as a proper Victorian lady, opposed suffrage for women. Academically Solid!

I've read many spurious versions of Annie Oakley's life. Now I don't have to read another, because I've seen the real story as documented by Riley. Her scholarship is outstanding, and she analyses Oakley's role as symbol of the showbiz Western myth as well as her quiet, hardworking life behind the scenes. If you like the dramatic lies, this book is not for you. If you want a portrait of Oakley as a woman and a symbol, read this.

An excellent concise reference

This was one of the sources that I used for my college term paper. Glenda Riley is concise and simple in her explanations; she does not "wander" in explaining and includes an extensive index which makes this an invaluable scholastic reference. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to quickly sort out the fact from the ficition of Annie Oakley.

Heavy on the Feminism

The facts in this book seem complete and accurate. We learn that Annie Oakley did not deliberately lose a shooting match to Frank Butler as she did in "Annie Get Your Gun," a product of the unfeminist fifties.
The information on the trials of Oakley's early life was especially interesting. I felt the book bogged down when the author began trying to fit Oakley into a feminist straitjacket, relating everything she did and didn't do to its connection with women's rights. I also grew tired of hearing how sweet, feminine, and ladylike Oakley was.

But Mora shows very clearly that the idea of ethnic grouping was historically constructed and institutionalized in the United States. During the 1960 census, reports classified Latin American immigrants as “white,” grouping them with European Americans. Not only was this decision controversial, but also Latino activists claimed that this classification hindered their ability to portray their constituents as underrepresented minorities. Therefore, they called for a separate classification: Hispanic. Once these populations could be quantified, businesses saw opportunities and the media responded. Spanish-language television began to expand its reach to serve the now large, and newly unified, Hispanic community with news and entertainment programming. Through archival research, oral histories, and interviews, Mora reveals the broad, national-level process that led to the emergence of Hispanicity in America.

The strands that link together Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans show how conscious actors can influence how their own representation in the American national landscape is achieved. It highlights significant individuals, and organizations in their efforts through advocacy, research and activism which has led to the emergence of a group that is now perceived as a pivotal in our electoral process, in the future of our educational system and our economy. Ironically, then these social categories lead to social identities that are the encasement for the racialization of Latinos into pseudo racial ethnic groups.

DAVID PARMENTER is an international presenter who is known for his thought-provoking and lively sessions resulting in substantial change in many organizations.

David is a leading expert on lean finance team practices, rolling forecasting and planning, and the development of winning KPIs. His work on KPIs is recognized internationally as a breakthrough in understanding how to make performance measures work. He has delivered interactive workshops in 31 countries over the last 20 years. Parmenter has worked for Ernst & Young, BP Oil Ltd., Arthur Andersen, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He is a regular writer for professional and business journals.

The aim of this book is try to illustrate with numerous examples how quantitative methods can most fruitfully contribute to linguistic analysis and research. In addition, it does not intend to offer an exhaustive presentation of all statistical techniques available to linguistics, but to demonstrate the contribution that statistics can and should make to linguistic studies. Among the linguistic community, statistical methods or more generally quantitative techniques are mostly ignored or avoided because of the lack of training, fear and dislike too. The reasons: (1) these techniques are just not related to linguistics, philology or humanities; statistics falls into the province of sciences, mathematics and the like; and/or (2) there is a feeling that these methods may destroy the "magic" in literary text. This book shows how quantitative methods and statistical techniques can supplement qualitative analyses of language. It attempts to present some mathematical and statistical properties of natural languages, and introduces some of the quantitative methods which are of the most value in working empirically with texts and corpora, illustrating the various issues with numerous examples and moving from the most basic descriptive techniques to decision-taking techniques and to more sophisticated multivariate statistical language models.

About the Author
Pascual Cantos Gomez has been a lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature at Universidad de Murcia, Spain, since 1990. Prior to this he had spent two years teaching English in a secondary school and the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas of Murcia. His main research interests are in Corpus Linguistics, Quantitative Linguistics, Computational Lexicography and Computer Assisted Language Learning. He is a member of the Linguistica Aplicada a la Computacion, Ensenanza de Lenguas y Lexicografi Research Group at the University of Murcia.
