Ideal for the single-variable, one-, or two-semester calculus course, Calculus of a Single Variable, 8/e, contains the first 9 chapters of Calculus, 8/e. The text continues to offer instructors and students new and innovative teaching and learning resources. The Calculus series was the first to use computer-generated graphics, to include exercises involving the use of computers and graphing calculators, to be available in an interactive CD-ROM format, to be offered as a complete, online calculus course, and to offer a two-semester Calculus I with Precalculus text. Every edition of the series has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. Now, the Eighth Edition is the first calculus program to offer algorithmic homework and testing created in Maple so that answers can be evaluated with complete mathematical accuracy. Two primary objectives guided the authors in writing this book: to develop precise, readable materials for students that clearly define and demonstrate concepts and rules of calculus and to design comprehensive teaching resources for instructors that employ proven pedagogical techniques and saves the instructor time. The Eighth Edition continues to provide an evolving range of conceptual, technological, and creative tools that enable instructors to teach the way they want to teach and students to learn they way they learn best.

Calculus textbook
By V. Cerussi
I am a high school math teacher teaching AP Calculus for the past 10 years. I had been using earlier editions of this textbook and recently switched to this newer edition. I am as pleased with it as I had been with earlier editions. This book is a good, basic, standard Calculus text with numerous applications-oriented problems and has proven to be an excellent preparation for the College Board's Advanced Placement examination.

It's NOT the texbook on CD-ROM!
By JS
I bought this CD-ROM thinking it was the actual pages of the printed book in electronic form, such as a PDF file. Boy was I wrong! What this CD-ROM provides is extra practice problems to test your mastery of the various chapters, and some extra study resources as well. If you are looking to avoid bringing this heavy textbook home to do your homework (in addition to all your other heavy textbooks!), you can forget it. This CD-ROM does NOT present the theorems, proofs, explanations, sample problems, homework sets, and their odd-numbered answers that you find in the actual hardcover textbook.
Don't buy this CD-ROM unless you're just looking for some extra practice materials grouped by the same chapter numbers as the real textbook itself. You can't use it to find and complete your homework assignments, or study theorems and proofs for a test.

I love this book
By N. Martin
I own the 1998 edition of this book from a Calculus I course I took at a community college in 2001. At $120, it was the second most expensive textbook and probably the one most worth it's money that I own to date. I kept it and used it to teach myself Calculus II and III, as the university I transferred to used a rather hideous book; I used it as a reference for physics; and when I finally went back to school last spring for an advanced undergrad/low level graduate course in probability and statistics last year, I re-taught myself much forgotten Calculus II material from this book. (In Calculus II and III I often worked problems out of this book to learn the material well enough to complete the assigned problems, as the university textbook did not have enough solutions with given answers to check your learning.)
It is written well enough to teach yourself to a great extent. The authors explain all terminology well in both plain English and symbols, and don't leave any missing gaps in their worked examples. This makes it easy to grasp for a first-time learner and probably a useful reminder to anyone else. When I used it as a reference for later courses, I found it useful not to have to fill in any missing gaps in logic when I pressed for time and needed to learn something quickly. The many, many exercises left for students to solve ensure that you will eventually understand all the concepts if you work enough problems. Advanced students can tackle the chapter motivations, exploration and historical problems given in boxes alongside the material, and work through selected proofs provided in the appendix. The visual representations of concepts in this book are unparalleled. None of my other undergraduate texts in mathematics come close. Some good teachers will make use of programs like Mathematica to help students really become familiar with and visualize concepts. Once you are out of the classroom and don't have access to the expensive software, it's wonderful to have a ready reference on the shelf with beautiful visualizations.
I've grown to love this book more and more over the last 12 years. Thankfully I did well in Analysis more in part to "getting" it the first time due to a good teacher and having this as a reference; my classmates were re-learning instead of just reviewing the concepts they were supposed to prove. Not to say I didn't sneak to the back of this book and read some of the proofs in the appendix for fun when I was taking introductory Calculus. I've just always felt that proofs which don't aid in motivating the material should come after you actually learn the material well the first time. It took hundreds of years for these concepts to become fully developed; most undergraduates won't be able to prove them until they see the concept done right the first time and fully understand it. I can say this was one of a handful of assigned mathematics books I've had for courses that I feel was written and designed with the student in mind. It made learning enjoyable instead of a headache all those years ago, and I still enjoy reading it from time to time for fun.
